He’s Not That Into This: Recognizing Depression in Men and Other Atypical Patients
Feedback
FAQ

Valerie A. Hart, EdD, APRN, CS and Nancy Balkon, PhD, ANP-C

In this engaging discussion, two experienced nurse practitioners discuss clinical challenges and gender biases encountered in the management and treatment of depressive disorders.

Supported by an educational grant from:

OVERVIEW
Women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression; hormonal factors and the responsibilities at work and home are cited as reasons for the disparity. However, even though 3 to 4 million men in the United States are affected by the illness, they are less likely to admit to the disease and healthcare professionals are less likely to suspect it. The same is true for other patient groups, including African American and Latino populations. In this interview, Valerie Hart, EdD, APRN, CS and Nancy Balkon, ANP-BC, PhD will discuss how atypical patients might manifest signs and symptoms of depression and how healthcare professionals can recognize this debilitating disease in all patients.
